Hi, Milk Bottle Wise Ones, I have this 1/2 pint I found in Milwaukee about 10 years ago when they were tearing down an old school. It was just right there in the dirt when I was walking past.

The seam trips me up. It doesn't run all the way up to the lip. I can't really get a good photo of it, either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Milk bottles don't always have a seam running all the way to the lip, that's because they were made in a different kind of machine than most ABM bottles. They're still ABM as long as they have a suction scar on the base and lack a tooled or applied lip though. Not sure when exactly yours dates to, typically these have a date code on the base but 1923 seems a bit early for yours, at least based on the types of bottles that our dairies were using around that era. It looks more like the bottles we had in the 30s and 40s.

Thank you! Good to know about milk bottles.
So there is a manufacturers mark at the bottom (Thatcher Glass Manufacturing) and opposite it, just the number 2.

Nice bottle. I think that is from 1929. The 29 outside the suction scar is most likely the date. Thatcher has many diff heel and base codes. The large triangle on the base is interesting. I have dug many with a large capital letter on the base which usually indicates the dairy for quicker sorting. Here is a good reference for mTc milks.

Thank you so much. I wondered about the 29. But it's never so simple. Haha! Glad it is.

And yeah... triangle with an S. I'll keep looking for that aspect. Thank you for the info and link!

You're right, that is a 29 and not a 23 like I first thought. 1929 seems a lot more plausible for a bottle of that design.

The seam line stops at bottom of the lip it will likely be turn of the century or before. The seam line goes thru the lip then it 1904 or after machine made bottle.
Your has a nice lite amber to it so they might of added magnesium to turn it to clear glass up to about 1910.

Yeah, the combination of the glass maker, the 29, and the seam line stopping before the lip all threw me. I figured it wasn't 1829, but if it was 1929 I'd have expected the seam to go over the lip.

But milk bottles seem to be the exception to the rule. So I'm going with 1929 as the date. :)

I indeed thank you all for your knowledge and help.

Not magnesium. Selenium = amber, manganese = purple.
