Went out for four hours today probing and digging. I traveled much further into the woods than I normally do... and Shazam! I found what looked like garbage pit and started going at it. The very first thing I hit was a jug mouth with the handle attached, imagine my heart rate. Sadly, it was in pieces and certainly not enough of them to save it. About ten minutes later I hit upon a 3 gallon, blue painted crock! I excavated it so carefully and delicately only to find out it was broken as well. But at least I found a spot that can be further explored and no doubt I'll be beating the heck out of it. See pics... there's a broken blob top base in there as well.

Next best thing to a good find is a piece of a good find. Look at them as previews of the good stuff to come!

That's a shame that they're broken, but it does suggest more could be out there! There's certainly still plenty of stoneware waiting to be found, especially because it was often thrown away much more recently than other stuff from its era. Someone on the Quebec forum recently posted a picture of an intact painted stoneware jug that they found sitting in a tree!

Was something like a 3 gal crock often dumped if it wasn't already broken? Or maybe got broken while being dumped?

Both are equally possible. Sometimes they had no need for them and dumped them whole. But, in the case you're describing, I too think they were broken before being dumped because there are still many pieces missing to them. Also, many times they break bottles, etc. intentionally in the bin they use to carry them to the dump area. Can get more broken bottles in a bin than whole ones.

It depends on the era. There seems to have been a lot of them thrown out intact in the 50s when home canning was falling in popularity. Earlier I think it was more likely for them to have been broken beforehand, but there were still intact ones thrown out.

This one I found in 10-15 pieces minus the bottom . I was able to glue it back together but 75 % of the very bottom was missing so I made a new base of plaster of Paris and Portland cement. The cover was intact not far from the crock.
