New to the site and would LOVE some assistance to identify the bottles I've found at a local flea market..... I have attached two (2) photos but can certainly take more if need be.... Thought they might have been old snake oil type bottles or even spice bottles but have scoured the internet and found nothing remotely like them.Anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction I would certainly appreciate your help. ThanksDenise

Those are nice to find with the ground stoppers. Probably held some kind of powder. Hard to say if they don't have some kind of embossing. You checked the bottom, right ? They will display nicely !

Hi Denise. Those are definitely apothecary bottles from 1880 - 1920s used in pharmacies to hold bulk powder to compound prescriptions. They would have had paper labels to identify the contents. The similar ground stopper bottles with smaller openings would have held liquids. Nice beginning. Welcome. Jim

I'm sorry to say they aren't worth much to a bottle collector in general, maybe $5.00 - $10 each, but perhaps more to a specialty collector or someone building an apothecary display, such as an older drug store, etc.. Interior decorators sometimes use them for effect / affect. (always have trouble knowing which of those to use) I suggest perhaps listing them on eBay if selling is your intent. Good Luck. Jim

Probably worth more as a set, though probably more to someone who collects antiques in general than a bottle collector, since there's nothing specifying who used them. Really hard to specify a price, it'll be worth what you can convince someone to pay for it. Also, effect is the noun and affect is the verb.

So all of you, I have an apothecary jar that needs a ground stopper. The top of the taper is 2-1/4" dia. with about a 3/4" vertical grinding and some kind of a knob for lifting off. If you have one to let go of - please let me know. RED Matthews Check my homepage. or email <bottlemysteries@yahoo.com>
