I was hoping to get some help identifying some glass makers marks on the bottom of several Hutchinson bottles I have. Here is some pictures as well as a description of each. They are 4 different NY state Hutch bottles -1st- Slug reads "Waterville Bottling Works" Bottom reads "1" and this bottle has a little more of a slope to the shoulder.2nd- Slug reads "J.H. Walsh & Co. Waterville, NY" Bottom reads "WB"3rd- Slug reads "Geo. O. Selfe Waterville, NY" Bottom reads "25 with an X underneath" and this bottle has a mug base4th- Slug reads "Geo. O. Selfe Waterville, NY" Bottom reads "R" and this bottle also has a mug base and an eagle on the back, the slug on this bottle is a tombstone or horseshoe shape. I can't seem to find any info online and don't have access to many bottle books so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Ian Dana Camp

The marks on the bottom are more than likely mold identifier marks. You may have some makers marks on the heel. Most of the times they are tiny letters and sometimes weak. RC

I think the WB is Waterville Bottling and maybe Mr. Walsh was the owner. the 25x is probably a mold number. I have a New York bottle with the same "R" as your George Selfe bottle. Might be Rochester Glass Works or what ever company made the bottle didn't change the bottom of the mold. I agree with botlguy. Lots of my hutch bottles have large letters on the bottom corresponding to the initials of the bottler.I was not too far from Waterville in October at a wedding at Turning Point Casino. Scott

From what I've seen, the glass maker mark is usually on the heel of Hutchinson bottles but that's just from casual looking, not collecting. Correct me if I'm wrong.

IanDana,I took a look at my hutch with the large "R" on the bottom and it is the same as your George Selfe tombstone, except the slug plate is Wm House, Lyons, NY. Same general color as well. Right next to that bottle is a mug based hutch, same color, circular slug plate Wm House, Lyons, NY with E S & H on the base. Ely Sons and Hoyt. A speculative guess is the "R" stands for Reed, as one of the previous owners of this company was a Reed. Eric, without looking at the bottom of more of my bottles, I agree that the maker's marks are on the heel and the base has a bottlers mark. Scott

Thank you all for the replies. I figured most of the marks on the bottom would be some sort of mold reference, but recently I watched a video on Hutchinson bottles and the guys in the video attributed the marks on the bottom of a few of the bottles they had to bottle makers so thats where my questions arose from. Ive looked closely at all the bottles and see no marks along any of the heels. Thank you again everyone
