thank you... that would be awesome. I wonder if it was with this weird brass oriental vase that came in this box of stuff, it was with... I can’t ID this one either, but that would make more sense.

Wow, that is close.... just trying to look this up is difficult... just precious not much, out there like this. I’m wondering, still.. what was with the nasty greasy coating... time and dirt, because it was thick. I thought it was a black bottle at first. Really nice job, Tex... now what do I do next, other than lock it away from my hairy spotted hoard of cats? Should I try and find someone for info and appraisal who’s area of expertise in antiques is Japanese or just keep researching it, (or all of that!) and I have no idea where to find someone who specializes in such things.... you guys are amazing, really.

I’d say it’s worth AT LEAST $200. Anything like that being that old is worth around that price. I’d even say it’s a museum quality item. So glad I could help you : - ) !

Nice job TxBottleDigger! Looks like you nailed it!

I was thinking "Tiger Wine" or "Tiger Whiskey" when I first saw the photo. I've heard both names applied to stoneware jugs that look like this: View attachment 224673 But all examples I've seen had the squatter profile as in the photo I've attached. Looks like Wildcat Wrangler has a predecessor design. I'm guessing that the squat examples, which were quite common in late 19th century Japanese communities in the Pacific northwest, evolved to be less prone to tipping over on shelf or tabletop.
Thanks !
: )

I got this bottle in a box of bottles from an estate sale and really don’t know much about stoneware bottles except this is old? When I first got it, it was very black and greasy. This is what I found after washing the gunk off it. I still am not finding any in this dark color. Any ideas? I’d love to know the age. (Judging by the weight of it, it could double as home defense!). Thank you for your help... you people are awesome!

To me it reminds me of the early french settlers homeade jugs/bottles. I've on ever found pieces, as they were from around 17-1800. I may be wrong but that is what I think. Still a great find!

I guess... if your into that kind of stuff! (it would make a better trumpet, I’m thinking!) It’s been fun trying to research all that came in those boxes. It’s kind of like digging bottles... you get what you get, and just don’t know how far you might have to look to know what it was that you got!

How is that for close? You guys are really, REALLY good- and while I have not said it enough, thank y’all! You have taught me so much. It’s true I have so much more to learn but that’s what I love about bottle collecting, the most. Every bottle I have researched has taught me so much, as well, always unexpected, surprising and even funny stuff, with their history. For instance every cure/remedy/snake oil bottle that I have delved into , has always had people with the law and courts after them- true rebels. And they would change wording on molds, to stay a little bit ahead of the law, or just take up sales in another county or do time in jail, over it. I have it in my mind, these same type people were the rum runners a few years later. I’m not sure of the age or what period in Japanese history my bottle is from, but as to what it is, you were just spot on. My bottle is a little taller and a little more narrow than the one in the pix, but very close. Thank you… your simply awesome!

Hi Wildcat Wrangler,

Maybe bring it up to Athens and let a Asian Hist. Prof take a look at it. What's it doing in Madison County--any WWII Pow Camps in the area? Who knows? Its probably more valuable than we think. Stay Well and pet the kitts for me. --CT Len
