Hey all while rooting around in old site dating to the 1880's in Oakland, uncovered this object.

Just throwing this out there to see what some of you think it is. My only guess is that it's some type of sign ornament that would stick into the ground?

I'm bored and just felt like posting something[:)]

I think it's driven into a solid object and then a string, rope or wire could be strung thru it's opening to hold it up, like some sort of telegraph line or the like...

I'm not too sure about that Jim, the opening on the side is rather small so after the pipe is put thru the hole what's the purpose of the small opening ?

It's hinged, so it can be opened to fit something inside it, and then when closed, a wire is wrapped around the curly parts on the right side to keep it closed.. [8|]

100% correct I didn't notice the hinge, Jim hit it right on the head it's a pipe strap. I actually have similar stuff in my shed and now I feel like a fool !!!!!

Well guys it looks to me like a support for a vertical section of vertical eaves trough drop It was probably stretched open with a flat screwdriver to slip the pipe through it. My guess it is an early Victorian period item. RED Matthews
