The 19 was one of Hemingray's most popular styles, called a "deep groove double petticoat" and originally designed for local electric power distribution. Hemingray produced the 19 from around 1890 up through WW2, when they changed to a different shape requiring less glass. Hemingray 19s also turn up in many other applications like railway signals, telephone, fire alarm signals.

Yours is from the 1920s. From the photo, I'm going to guess yours is the color collectors call "Hemingray blue" which in this case doesn't have a great deal of collector value. Hemingray 19s come in a wide variety of colors and the amber, bright green and cobalt ones are sought after.

How can you tell when these Hemingray 19s were made? Are they all CD162s? What about the differences in dri points (sharp versus round)?

The reason I ask is because I have a mint Hg19 in HG Blue and one in 7UP green (I guess common colors).

Thanks!

Good questions, MF150.

Hemingray was in business for a long time and we're able to date them by the colors, embossing and type of drip points.

This style existed since the early 1890s, but Hemingray didn't emboss them with "19" until around 1910. That mold style has HEMINGRAY on the front and No. 19 on the back and they nearly always have sharp drip points.

Around 1919 the company added MADE IN U.S.A. to the molds (the exact year is open to some debate). Not long afterward the embossing became HEMINGRAY - 19 and MADE IN U.S.A. on the back.

Around the mid-1920s, drip points changed from sharp to round. Around 1930 Western Electric demanded that insulators be clear, or at least very close to colorless. In the early 1930s many insulators still retain an aqua, blue or green tint, becoming closer to truly clear a few years later.

All of the Hemingray 19s made up to 1942 are CD 162. Hemingray began making a new number 19 in 1942, which required less glass and is CD 163.

Here's a link to CD 162 photos, and the center one is 7-up green: http://www.nia.org/general/cd_text/cd162/cd162_hemingray.htm Does that color match yours? It's definitely better than common.

Hemingray blue is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the typical embossings in Hemingray blue are listed at less than 5.00, but if you have an unusual or old example, or one marked H. G. Co. and not Hemingray, it could bring more.
