IP vs. OP

I like these two:

Open pontil for medicines(didn't know of iron pontils on meds until the pics posted)
Iron pontil for soda waters,porters etc

I just like pontils in general weather open, iron, sand chip, or solid rod. If its pontiled I like it.

Pontiled bottles should be considered damaged and disposed of properly. I will help the cause send me those nasty sharp and rusty pontiled bottles in trade for some awesome screwtops and ABMs. ill make sure they wont cause anyone anymore grief. []

I like anything pontiled, but deep, black iron pontils are my favorite. The rectangular iron pontils on medicine bottles are especially cool. For any pontil, the deeper and cruder, the better.

These two do not disappoint. The one on the left has an irregular shape with jagged glass partially surrounding the iron, and the one on the right is the deepest iron pontil I have seen. ~Jim

Those look great Jim! I know we all love pontils, this new category still hasn't seemed to really take off too fast just yet, and I figured it could be a way to share some photos of some of the great pontils that are on some of the bottles we own. I can't say I like one any more than the other. Of course it can be bottle specific. OP sodas are much harder to find, and like Matt mentioned IP's on certain meds are less often found. Sand chip, iron, open, it's all good!

I like a good pontil, although I really only have 3 that I've dug! One's an early 1880's seltzer with a refired pontil. Plus there's the 2 inks that I don't hesitate to post... [] I wanna dig an iron pontiled bottle, I like those a lot better. May have something to do with be being a soda/beer collector, and I sure can't afford a good IP squat yet!

Believe it or not this is an OP too, although not as obvious as the previous one...

If I had to choose,...being a med oriented guy,...there's something really cool about a misshapen and crude early med, with a big old jagged open pontil....but like Chris said,...all pontiled bottles are cool in their own right.
