I dug a wine near a spot that had produced all pre 1870s stuff and was interested in this when I saw it:

The arrows point to a rough ring patch that is circular around the inside of the kick up. Is this a pontil scar? I very well could be wrong, but that is what it looks like.

The wine has a wavy ring top and stretch marks on the neck.

Normally these types of wines are very common but this one has an odd lighter color of green and this odd scar on the inside of the kickup.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

That's a deep punt. I have it's twin. Mine is pontiled and is from the 1860's. Is yours 11 3/8" tall too? I will dug mine out and post a picture this weekend. Nice one!

Here is it's twin. 1860's if I am not mistaken. Rough pontil on a deep punt. Stretch marks around the neck. Hope everyone likes. No major issues but the average wear and tear and a little sickness inside. Color is deep olive green.

I agree that it must be pontiled. I have one like that as well, however there are later unpontiled examples with the same type kickup without the roughness. My question, probably more so in reference to the pontiled examples, is how is the inverted, solid dome of glass at the top of the kickup formed? There are plenty of bottles of identical form, pontiled but without the dome, so I feel that a different technique in manufacture has to account for the difference and that it's not just happenstance. I've wrestled with this forever it seems, and have yet to figure it out. I have a couple of maybes in my mind, but nothing definitive enough to say, "Yeah, that's it." Anybody?

Like this? I have three different ones on hand. All are turn mold bottles. Left is a pontiled deep punt. the middle is a rounded punt with a blob of glass and the right one is a flat bottom but same blob of glass that the middle bottles punt has up inside.
