Through craigslist I have acquired a stoneware jug, I had my local go-to guy (who owns a very nice/successful antique store) appraise it for age which he estimated to be 1830's to 1840's.

I bought the jug from a man who bought the jug from an antique dealer in Albany, NY. He even gave me the guy's name ( I wrote it down somewhere)

Anyway, I have dubbed him "Juglas" .

Interesting shape on that one! I don't remember seeing that sort of jug with such a narrow base before. Do you think it's American? Apart from the shape it looks pretty similar to the stoneware I'm familiar with. Might be because it's earlier than most of what we get around here, I'm not sure.

well I mean if you want to be not jokey it's called an Ovioid (egg shaped) jug. This shape predates the familiar cylindrical shape we all associate with jugs.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, it reminds me of the older European stoneware I've seen in pictures of Bellarmine jugs and that sort of thing. That's a pretty good find!
