Found this here in Texas...J. Winer's Chamomile Pills. Open pontil, just 2-1/4" tall. Anyone ever seen one before? Apparently a Hamilton, Ontario, Canada product...I've never seen a pontiled bottle from Canada before!

Matt has a J. Winer Pectoral Syrup listed in his guide, not sure if it's the same guy...

I think J Winer products were also produced in New York and New Orleans. They may have originated in Canadia

John Winer established a pharmacy and proprietary medicine business at Hamilton, Ontario (then called Upper Canada) in, off the top of my head, sometime in the late 1820s/early 1830s. His business grew well and he eventually opened a distribution branch in New York, which explains the fair number of Winer bottles, especially Winer's Canadian Vermifuge, which are found States-side. To secure a cheaper source of bottles for his medicine trade, Winer was an original investor in the Hamilton Glass Works established in the mid-1860s. Your bottle is a beauty, and if you'd like to see it find its way home, I'd certainly like a shot at it, but I won't push it, most especially if you enjoy it.

In my short collecting career I have not seen a Canadian blown bottle either. Perhaps Bixel or MacTaggart will chime in. Ontario is their domain, 1250 miles ( 2000 kms ) from me.
VERY INTERESTING FIND !!

Glen,

Thanks so much for the information! It came out of the earliest privy I have dug here in Texas...about 15 pontiled puffs and this bottle was all that was in there. I'm guessing early 1840's as we have dug some late 1840's privies and the stuff that came out of them was very different than what came from this one. Thought it was a puff as well until I cleaned it up. I'm going to keep it for now but will let you know if I decide to let it go.

Hey, no worries. Winer was an interesting entrepreneur and one of Hamilton's leading citizens.
