It's well known that I can be a bit opinionated, post way too much and contact Ebay sellers and buyers just a bit too often regarding what they are buying and selling, but once again it paid off to open my BIG MOUTH and contact a Ebay seller who had a bottle I wanted in a 2 bottle lot. There was a David Boyle 30oz. crown top that I wanted because it also had Pompton Lakes embossed on it and it's one my buddy might need for his collection. So when the pair went up for sale I contacted the seller making an offer on just the Boyle because I already had the Brenneisen that he had listed it with, he told me if they didn't sell he would be open to accepting my offer.
The pair didn't sell since there are only a few of us collecting Paterson and even fewer interested in these big crowntops, so I headed up to West Milford this morning after the seller told me he had some 'other' Paterson bottles as well. I was expecting a couple of bottles to be there, but much to my surprise there were 5 or 6 boxes, 99% crowns, sitting on his truck bed and the yard was full of small John Deere tractors everywhere you looked. Turns out those John Deere's are his version of what we do here...
There were a couple of blobs and a strapside flask set aside that he wants to keep for now, I did offer to buy the strapside and a Braun blob to replace the one I sent to the Braun family after Hurricane Sandy and he was nice enough to tell me I could have first shot at them if he decides to part with them. I started looking thru the boxes and there was a nice variety of variants I needed, a few I wasn't sure if I had or not(I need to get a smartphone!), and a couple I thought might be good traders and if not I figured I could at least find a buyer on Ebay.
He was a hell of a nice guy and as we chatted I asked where they all came from, turns out his grandparents bottled Grape Juice, and it seems they used any bottles thay could find, how cool is that??? I picked out 23 bottles, leaving about 60 or so behind that I already have and we discussed a bit of the history and why I collect Paterson bottles. A fair price for both of us was agreed upon and we boxed the bottles up, and I put them in the truck. I then talked with him about the other bottles still at the house that he had to clean out, many from NYC along with a bunch of canning jars, it was a real pleasure to see what he had for me and talk bottles on such a beautiful morning. I told him I would be happy to help with the other bottles once he got them cleaned up, partly because I love talking bottles and partly because I'm hoping it will keep me in mind for the other bottles I was interested in. I told him to check out the site, assured him I wasn't lowballing him on the bottles I was buying and that he wouldn't find them on Ebay. If that was the case I would have made an offer on the remaining 60 or so bottles...
I hope to hear from him again, on the way home I'll do some fishing in one of the many lakes or ponds in the area and make it a whole day affair.
