these marks look similar, are they from the kiln /

Very likely. All sorts of thing can leave marks on these commercial pieces -- inclusions in the clay body, in the slip, not to mention collapse of other pieces in the kiln. Here's an example in which a failed piece collapsed against its neighbor.
