Lafayette script aqua jar

I was given some jars and bottles recently and I’m trying to figure out what’s what. There’s an aqua jar that says Lafayette in a cursive style. It doesn’t have a lid with it. I haven’t been able to find a ballpark value for it anywhere but I’m fairly new to the antique glass world. I’m trying to get as much detail on all my bottles/jars including dates, history, pictures. I’m sure that with a lid it would be worth a lot more. I had never seen or heard of this one before so I’m really curious about it. Any help would be appreciated.

There are several variations of that jar, most have a profile of his head above the name. If yours doesn't, my old Red Book (#8) lists it for $1,00.00 and up. The closure is 30-40% of the value. If you are into Fruit Jars the newest Red Book is a must.

Sounds like a cool one. Next mission, get a correct lid.-- Mr. L. was the 2nd best thing France ever sent to America.(The Statue of Liberty agrees.) He was the first ever foreigner to be made an American by act of Congress and returned here more than once. A very good soldier and G.W. thought of him as his son. What maker let a jar out missing his bust?!

The Lafayette jar was manufactured by the Hartford Fruit Jar Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1884-1889. The jar was produced in three variations. 1) "Lafayette" in script lettering, 2) "The Lafayette" in block lettering, & 3) "Lafayette" in script lettering below a profile of the man. Current Red Book (no.12) values for your particular aqua jar are : Half Gallon $150-250, Quart $150-200, & Pint $300+. These jars took a 3pc. glass and cast iron stopper. Closure value for Aqua glass is 20-30% and Clear glass is 30-40%. Congrats on a nice find. Lafayettes are very popular & collectible amongst jar collectors.

It’s THAT Lafayette!? Wow. I never even came close to putting that together! That just made this jar so much better to me! Love that kind of historical value personally. G.W. gave a watch fob to a great, great…grandfather of mine back in the day. Last I knew, someone in the family still had it. Just a fun side fact on that and nothing to do with this jar. I’ve only ever seen the fob in a picture of G.W. cause he had one just like it. Thanks for the info though. I really appreciate it.

BINGO! Hey Pocopear,

I think you should track down that member of the family that still has the fob, (The holidays are coming. You may get lucky.) and make sure that fob doesn't disappear. Next thing--make a date for an eval on the Antiques Rd. Show (PBS) because you have an American treasure in your family! Let us know if you make any headway. Very nice to see somebody still connected to their family's great American roots.
