As most of the older members on this forum know, my passion is U.S.A. Hosp. Dept bottles made only for the Union Army and only during the years of the Civil War. I make this post for those who love the history surrounding a bottle, the scarcity of a bottle, the color of a bottle, and the thrill of finding such a bottle. I hesitate to call a bottle "Rare" as that term is thrown around way to loosely in this hobby. I can say this, however. Since 2003, I have only seen pictures of 2 other than the one now residing at my house. Dr. Cannon had one, and a bottle friend of mine in Nebraska had one. I have never seen one at a major auction house, or Ebay, so I do not know the value of this bottle. If anyone has seen one of these sell, I would love to know what it went for just so I can have a ball park figure for my grandkids after they plant me. lol!
This bottle was dug by me in 2003. It has not been in my collection since that day in 2003 but never has been very far away. I gave it to my digging buddy (not knowing what I had at the time). It came out of the ground very dirt encrusted and it looked to be an unembossed small cobalt med. As it turned out, it was a very uncommon U.S.A. Hosp. Dept bottle. 3 " tall and a very deep Amethyst. I call it Black Amethyst. Well, for my 53rd birthday, my diggin buddy of old wrapped it up and gave it back to me. Thought some of you might enjoy .

PS. Check out the base and tell me what you think. I have only heard of the large mouth Aqua being iron pontiled, but this base doesn't look smooth either????

Joe, I just don't know. I always called it smooth. I don't know of any reference to compare it to. That's the problem. I haven't contacted my friend in Nebraska about the base. I should do that to see if his is the same. I have no idea how to get in touch with Dr. Cannon. I found him on Google.

Brian, I will try to post a pic of all my Hosp. bottles in the future, but it won't come close to your collection of Bitters, Drakes in particular![:D] Thank you though, Kelley
