Dug this here in Texas a while back...deep teal color, wild rough open pontil, one panel embossed "Boston" right near the base, another panel (partial) embossed OD right near the base. Bottle would have been about 4" in diameter. Anyone know what this was? Very fancy, so I am thinking food of some kind, but the glass is also quite thick. Trash pit dated from 1850's-1870's.

first thought is a pepper sauce . Something similar to http://www.ebay.com/itm/WELLs-MILLER-PROVOST-CORKER-PEPPER-SAUCE-EXCELLENT-SHAPE-O-P-/190895488026

not really my area of knowledge. Need to check Zumwalts.

I paged through Zumwalt and this looks like it could be the base to the wide mouth pickle she shows on page 277 (W.K. Lewis & Co. Boston), but nowhere have I found a photo that shows any embossing on those around the base. Anyone have an intact example of one of these?

You folks are great-that matches up for sure! Very cool...a heartbreaker for sure. Not far away from this was a broken cathedral Atmore's. Maybe someday one of these great food bottles will be whole. Some great bottles made it down here to Texas!
