Hello. I recently dug up a privy behind my 1873 house in New Orleans. I' m wondering if I found the oldest privy on the property and need help dating the dig. I set up a quick website with pictures of the bottles at http://www.moviedesign.com/privy/ .None of the bottles are open pontiled and only one or two have a seem on the lip. Any help would be appreciated. Here is a group picture from the dig.

Most of the bottles seem to be from the 1880-1910 era.
I would say you have got the older privy from what you show on your website.
They' re of the era.

I would have to agree with Woody on this one the strap flask with the square applied lip is a mid to late 1870s bottle and the blob soda looks to be 1880s but most of the stuff seems to be 1890-1910. chances are your privy was dipped out in the late 1880s early 1890s and most of the earlier stuff was removed during the dipping than the privy was used for another 15or so years and simply filled in. you may have a later privy on your property if you town got a swer system later than 1910 or so.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this. I feel lucky to have found so much stuff in my tiny backyard.
