To Sandchip's thorough explication of "iron pontil," I can add only that the iron pontil is the "improved pontil" promoted by Dr. Dyott of the Dyottville Glass Works.
Yessir, it was definitely an improvement in that you weren't as likely to cut yourself on one of those jagged open pontil scars.

True, that. Consumers of that age must have had accidents. Even today, when I spy a bottle with collection potential, my first inclination is to run my fingertips over the base. ouch!
From Dr. Dyott's perspective as a manufacturer, the improvement was the elimination of a step in production. No longer was a pontil rod dipped in glass (crushed or molten) for a fixative. A small matter, unless you are producing thousands of bottles per day.
