Picked up this awesome Newmark & Gruenburg coffin whiskey this week. I believe it to be a scarce or rare bottle, not much on the web regarding the rarity. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Larry

I believe you can consider this one RARE due to the fact that John Thomas, in 2002, does not list this variant. His only flask with these names describes a Union Oval in amber. Being a clear / colorless Coffin flask it probably won't command as high a price as some of the others but lower 4 figures is not bad. Congratulations on a nice find.

Hey thanks Jim. I do come across many west coast whiskies and am looking for a good reference, what would you recommend?

The ones I use for Western bottles are any / several by John Thomas and / or Bob Barnett. Both are deceased now so their books might be a little difficult to find. Bob's books and John's earlier ones listed most variants while John's last one is about the rarer types. It includes some beautiful color pictures of some OUTSTANDING Western whiskies. John also put out books on Washington and I believe Oregon whiskies, I have the Washington book. You are welcome to come by or call if you have a question.

Yea,,, kinda forgot about Ralph. He hasn't written any books that I am aware of but he is certainly the current authority I believe.

Well, Jim from Idaho was close. John Thomas lists it in the 1974 edition of "Picnics, Coffins And Shoo-Flies" as being made only in 1882-84 but valued at $25. Of course that was nearly 40 years ago, so this is a pointless figure, but historically interesting none the less. This company has an extensive write-up in this book and due to my lack of typing skills, it would likely take me an hour+ to type and most of it is an ad from 1883. I have taken pics of the relative info on your bottle but still took several pics to catch it all, for which I apologise to everyone else for the several posts.....Jack
