Nice surprise

Every now and then we dig a few marbles and most of the time the glass ones are in bad shape and you can't even tell what kind they are. As was the case with some of these but I had a hunch that they might be good ones so I sent them off to get polished. A few days later I got a phone call from the guy I sent them to, I could hear some excitement in his voice as he told me that he has been into marbles for over 40 years and he has never seen a marble like one of the ones I sent him, it was sort of a onionskin in clear glass with mica that was probably worth about $300 to $450 WOW !!!! Next he said one of them was a single pontil end of cane onionskin worth $400 WOW !!! Another one was a clown onionskin worth $125 YEAH !!!! And another was a Joseph's Coat worth $100 HELL YEAH !!!!! Another was a Christensen Agate Co. Flame Worth $75 to $125 YEAH !!!! And the last one was another onionskin worth about $50 NICE !!! Not bad for a bunch of beat up pieces of glass that you could not even see into. When digging bottles are only part of the fun !

Nice! If you don't mind me asking, what do they charge to polish six or eight marbles? I have a jar full of beat up glass marbles that I have no idea what they are.

The guy I use is in Nebraska and he charges $6 for marbles up to 1" and $7 for anything over that. The way he breaks it down is a 3 step process and if your marble does not need all 3 steps he will adjust the price down accordingly. The other nice thing is that you can send him a bunch of marbles and say use your judgement and only polish the ones that are worth it and that is what he will do. Polishing marbles is like polishing bottles everyone has a different opinion on it and each has there pros and cons but if you take the ones I have here what possible good are they if you can't even see what they are.

Clam,...great post and before and afters...This paperweight came out of an early privy here in our town last year...I pulled it up out of the water w/ my rake and at first thought it was a stone...It reminds me of your marbles,...I think the original homowner used it for a hammer,...looks as though he (she?) drove in some nails with it...Do you think the gent could polish it?,...I'd like to see it's true colors...It's about the size of a small apple.
