Odd looking jar. - What did it contain

A friend dug this up about 2 feet down while digging a trench. I can usually tell what they contained but this is an oddball. It's machine made, probably 1950 - 70, snap on cap. What is your input?

Kinda looks like it was made for display, by the feet at least, how large is it, maybe for candy...............
Thank you Andy, I should have included that or included something for comparison. It measures 3 7/8" tall, slightly oval 3" X 2 1/2", 1 7/8" I.D. at the mouth. I'm thinking perhaps something like Maraschino cherries.

That is a great guess, I was going to suggest pimientos or peppers of some sort, I have never seen a jar like that, but I think you are correct with the timeline, so I would think someone here may know........
