I just picked up this little beauty from a fellow forum member. This bottle has been on my want list ever since I found out that it existed. This is a JACOB PABST/ PATTERSON, Pa porter, c. 1870s. Patterson, PA no longer exists, as it became the borough of Mifflin in 1900. It is located about 10 miles east of Lewistown, so this is a local bottle for me. ~Jim

I just found out that my "Mifflin" bottle is actually a coal region bottle. I found another town that had formerly been named Patterson, this one in Schuylkill county. I mentioned this to our fellow forum member Tod of sodasandbeers.com. Tod found records of a retail liquor dealer named Jacob Pabst operating in Schuylkill Township (which included Patterson) from 1861 to 1865 or 66.

It's always fun to solve a bottle mystery. I spent hours trying to figure this out, and came up empty. Thumbs up to Tod for cracking this one. ~Jim

Awesome bottle Jim, love it! Congrats on adding it to your collection! It's so great to find a good local to pick up, and that looks like a super one to get [:)]

Thanks, Tim and Jim. A lot of guys would have been really bummed to find out that a bottle they have been after for years isn't quite as local as they had thought. Especially to find out right after they finally get one! Me, I'm just as happy knowing its "true identity". I'm a local bottle guy first and foremost, but I love early PA sodas and beers from any part of the state. No way am I going to be disappointed with ANY PA porter with a rectangle slug and a Civil War date range.

Jim, just imagine if this bottle was exactly as it is except for two things- One less "T" and "NJ" in place of "PA". For your sake, I hope something similar does indeed exist. A rectangle-slug Paterson, NJ porter would be right at home with you. ~Jim

Epackage, there is another one picture on my site that does not have PA embossed on it. A great crude deep green porter. You can always pretend it is from NJ. [;)]
