Dug this one out of a civil war camp; Taylor & Rodgett's can, New York; with Burnet's attachment patented Aug. 21 1853. ---I got spooked when I read the date, because I found it the same day. I wonder how many people got poisoned off of the lead content.

Nice lid. It says Taylor & Hodgetts and the date should be 1855. Listed in RB10 as #2788. Value is $250+ for the can and lid in good shape. It went on a tin can. I'm betting it's still got some good value to it even like it is. Good find.

Thanks for the info. This one came out of a CS camp with Virginia and South Carolina troops. I have seen another variant with 1865 date in a civil war book. Looks like they were screwed on to the can after twisting. Do you happen to know when the first threaded lids or tops were produced?

I think it screwed into the can and not onto it. I know that threaded caps have been used on different bottles for more then 1000 years. Not sure when the very first was though. As for the threads being molded or formed, I think there were threaded bottles since before the 1850s or so. I'm not 100% sure but I think I'm remembering right.
