Porcelain insulators. Gotta question.

Today I picked up this porcelain insulator. It is a U-50. I was wondering how you could tell how old it was and what company made it?

This is so neat. I have only seen a few on poles and they were a dark maroon color. Most are always glass. Wish I could help but I have no idea as to maker, nor the age. Looks like it got wacked by lightening!!!!!!!!!!!
