Found these fragments digging in a dump today. It looks like barnacles or something is on the pottery. Don't know if this was a old shipwreck pottery or if it's new and apart of the design. I am nowhere nere an ocean

It sure looks like barnacles. I suspect that some really old stuff and possibly even ancient stuff like they find on shipwrecks in the Black Sea . It looks like it was one huge vessel too! Lots of frags there. Wonder if anything could be glued together to get an idea of the size and shape. Man that's an archeological find type deal! Johnny M.

It could be pretty old. I don't know enough about pottery to say that it is old. Anyone know how I can tell if this pottery is old or modern?

It's not modern if you dug it in an old dump. What age is the site you are excavating? Stands to reason that's the era it was tossed but still could be 1000 years or more old! Johnny M.

Doesn't look like barnacles to me, and I'm from the west coast so I've seen plenty over the years. I'm thinking it's either some sort of chemical which was spilled onto the pottery or some reaction that the glaze had to being in a hot fire. I'd be curious to see whatever these things reconstructed, it doesn't look like any sort of stoneware jug I've seen before. Does one piece have a hole in the bottom like a flower pot? (If so, it probably is a flower pot, come to think of it - that pottery looks like terracotta). The top is quite interesting though, it looks like the top to a Chinese whiskey bottle but it's much too big for that.

What were you finding alongside it? Anything identifiable as being from a particular era?

I think your green stuff might be algae or mold, and agree with CanadianBottles that it looks like terracotta.

Looks like Lichen growing on it. I doubt its new. Hopefully you find enough to start piecing things together for a general idea of the size/shape.

It was found in a 1890s dump. Whatever the pot was it was very large.

Looks like it. It could be from any era. It looks to have been ancient already when tossed
