Privy Digging Technique Question

I am just about to dig my first privy here in AZ and have a question. I know to
dig straight down and try to find the width and length with a probe "liner".

Is the bottle layer always at the bottom? When you are standing in the pit how
do you avoid breaking the bottles by stepping on them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Karl

I will always try to dig with a buddy. Will let you know what
I find and hopefully post some pics.
