A new acquisition for the collection. I am not a supporter of altering colors of glass because it brings suspicion to most anything different, especially purple. I purchased this to add to my 1840-1860-ish apothecary collection. I watched it for along time before I decided it was not irradiated, rather a strawberry or dark cherry puce. I hope I am right and will let you all weigh in on it. I am waiting for it to arrive to see it hands on rather than from pictures. This is why I dislike altering glass colors. It is deceptive and brings questions when buying on-line, without handling the piece. The seller assured me it had been in his collection "for years", and that he had purchased it from an estate auction, which led me to believe it was authentic rather than irradiated or "zapped" as Greg Spurgeon likes to call them. What say you?Ep BTW, I love puce glass... show me yours.

It looks fine but once in hand you will know, doesn't have that sick overdone color but I agree that the fakers make it hard to trust anyone.

His was an eclectic mix of antiquities. In fact, it was his only bottle.

I just received a response from the seller which gives me more confidence it is authentic. Hello and thanks for purchasing this jar. I have had this jar for 10 years. I purchased it at an antique auction in fincastle VA. The auction co. Is ken Stanley auctions which I believe have a website. I really don't think this has changed in color. It was found in an old house and they said it was probably the oldest piece in the auction. So let me know what you think after you look at it. Thanks again. John... Apparently, I made the right decision.Ep

Hello epgeorge; I like the looks of it and I also like old jars. Colonial America used a lot of them in the kitchen and yours looks old. The pictures are now very clear, so we have realize that the pontil can't be given any analysis. Was the capping cover empontilled? RED Matthews

Red,It has a seam all the way through it. I don't have the item yet, though I have one just like it. The one I have is Olive Green and the top is rough like it went through a different cooling process than the blown, molded utility jar. The jar itself may be a three piece mold as there is a line around the shoulder (in the one I already have) and the side seam stops there. The top stopper of the puce jar has just been uploaded for you to see. It appears as if the puce jar does have a pontil or an uneven shalish slag from being release in the mold. What say you? I will update this in another day or two with pictures of the new item.Joel

The Olive Green jar has a tooled, rolled outward lip. I can't tell from the pictures if the new one has a rolled lip as well. The inside of the stopper is smooth on the olive green jar and it has a J inscribed in it. The seam is all the way through the top, including the part you grab with your fingers. I love these jars and have noticed they are getting more expensive to win. I would love to see other Puce bottles or apothecaries.Joel
