Hi Everyone
I've been doing some researching and I found a spot where there used to be a railroad stop/depot. I haven't been to the spot yet but according to google maps the buildings are no longer there. I don't know when the station was built but it's listed on an 1884 insurance map so it was around since at least then until it was torn down. I even found a 1906 photograph of it on google which I wave included below. I was wondering if this would be a good spot to do some bottle hunting. Has anyone else had any luck searching around former train depots? Any pointers on where to search in relation to where the depot was? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Anthony

do you have a metal detector ? i think your going to need one in order to find anything or at least really good eyes . i can often spot glass if even only a small portion of bottle showing in the leaves or dirt . it will be hard to find anything if its been gone for so long . but if it was a station there could definity be stuff there .

Yes 50 yards or so into the woods behind the tracks then look for a low area that has been filled in with the trash.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I don't have a metal detector RCO. But I think I'll check out the site. Stumpknocker did you find those 2 bottles near an old train depot? The station is listed on a 1941 topo map but not on a 1943 topo map so I'm guessing that the station was taken out of service in 1942 or 1943.

Yes Anthony one of the bottles came from the Dunnellon Depot Dump and the other came from Connors Landing. It was common to clean the Trains and Steamer at the stops while unloading and loading passengers then discard the refuse off in a low laying area.

I would try the privy for sure. If you have access to a Sanborn fire insurance map it might show the privy. I have dug three depot privies all by using the Sanborn. Two were pretty good and one had nothing in it. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be sure to try to find the privy. According to the Sanborns there were a few smaller buildings near the main station. I don't know if one of these was the privy or not but I'll check out both locations as well as any low areas in the woods nearby. I'll be on the lookout for insulators too.

Thanks again!
Anthony
