American / Mineral Water Co / S.F.

COLOR. Aqua

VARIANT. Found in Hutchinson and Crown Cap type bottles

LOCALITY: San Francisco

CIRCA: 1899 – 1906

RARITY: Extremely Rare

From 1899 through 1915 James J. Rooney and Ernest E. Zimmerman were the proprietors of the American Soda Water Works, conducting business at 925 Bryant Street from 1899 to 1905, and at 2485 Bryant Street from 1905 to 1915.
The above information was taken from Western Blob Top Soda and Mineral Water Bottles : Peck & Audie Markota. (1994)

It's not a hard bottle to find. Just go to the “A's†in Peck & Audie Markota's book. However, if you are looking for one in the wild “fugetaboutitâ€. This bottle is nearly impossible to find. I suppose that's because it is so late in manufacture. These bottles were probably recycled ~ or they are just too late in time to show up in the earlier dumps.

My American Mineral Water bottle was found in The City. Being beyond compare, San Francisco stands alone deserving the title. The city. The one & only.

It is Americana at it's best with a large embossed stars & stripes flag. The embossing nearly jumps off the bottle and is found in rich aqua. (is a little weird ~ sounds like it's strutting the runway w/ long legged models ~ yikes ~ let me return to my masculinity) It's a man's bottle....bold. One could refuse to place this bottle with it's earlier pontil scarred brothers....or could you ? It's a blob top. The seam stops at the neck. Did I mention it's a blob top?

I like it immensely & post it here for your scrutiny.

While I'm at it ~ here's another blob soda from the same time period.

Again I refer to Peck & Audie Markota's book on Western Blob's.

Pioneer/(Bear)/ Soda Water Co/ S.F.

REVERSE: Club Soda (diagonally)

COLOR: Aqua

VARIANT: Comes in Hutchinson type bottle.

LOCALITY: San Francisco

CIRCA: 1897-1906

RARITY; Rare

Prior to 1897 this company was known as the Pioneer Soda Water Works, with Martin Walsh and Charles Welch proprietors. In 1897 the company became known as the Pioneer Soda Water Company, with William Walsh and George Collins proprietors, location being 1555 Mission San Francisco. This partnership lasted until 1902 at which time the business was taken over by Louise Theirback who was the proprietor until 1906.

This bottle crawls into your heart. Again a logo that seems to jump off the bottle. Yes it is only aqua, but a rich aqua with a great California motif. We are the Bear Flag State.

Both bottles have been in my collection for many years... Over time, I have found many Owen Casey's ~ not so many B&G's... but I have never seen a shard of one of these bottles ~ later but very collectible.
