January 3rd of the New Year and I got myself in the dirt today! Hell Yes I'm really going to stick to this resolution of getting out to dig a lot this year.
So my new probe came in the mail today(Thanks John"Jaken") and since I was home and the ground has softened up a lot here in CA from the rains.,I got in the backyard and found glass shards within a few sticks of the probe.
I started a test pit around the area where a lot of shards and straight nails have been found by me before. My house only dates to 1907 but from the old maps I have, there was an older house here in 1889. So I only spent an hour just with the initial hole, but it looks promising since there seems to be an older vein or trash pit that I am starting to hit...found big chunks of a black glass bottle
I Found a horseshoe, then showed my kids and they were like "where would they keep a horse around here?" Had to remind them that this kind of trendy neighborhood in Oakland looked a lot different in the turn of the century.
Anyway I hope to find some whole bottles or cool artifacts tomorrow as I continue the dig.
Cheers,
Doug
