I originally had a couple of group photos from the past few dives lined up but after today those are getting bumped. After striking out at a couple spots this morning I decided to go to a spot I had some luck with earlier in the year. On the way there I was riding by a a spot I just hadn't gotten around to so i opted dive here instead of my original destination. Things started off fine except for the fact the water had gotten considerably colder with nights dipping to the low 50's.
After spotting a small dump behind a farm house I dove in to check it out. Not wanting to obscure my visability when disturbing the bottom I started down stream working back up. It's here on the edge of the visible part of the dump I noticed about four feet down a mucky bed of lily pad roots. This is where I noticed the side of the crock sticking out of the mud. I immeadetly realized this was the perfect spot if this thing was going to be whole. Sure enough it was and boy I was stoked since all the other stoneware this year has been from the turn of the century. However since the cold water was getting to me I went down stream a little more then decided to head home. On the way back straddling my kayak since the crock was in my seat body convulsing from shivering I happened to look down and find a bottle in about a foot and a half of water. I saw it had a lip chip and pontil but I really couldn't tell about its color until I reached the car. It was here when I saw it was amber but my heart sunk hard when I saw it had a shoulder crack. A lip chip I could have lived with but the crack really depressed me. If this thing was in better condition I would have finally found my first Stoddard pontil med and thousand plus dollar bottle. While all of this can make a grown man cry, I still have the fact when next year comes around and is warmer I'm going to be all over this spot. BTW the crock was perfect with no cracks
