I've had this for some time, but it's always mystified me. It's embossed SYRACUSE BAKERY / 5 c[ents sign] / PREMIUM BRAND. Also embossed with capacity 1 pint 14 oz, so that's 30 oz total.

Any ideas what sort of product a bakery would sell in a crown-top bottle? My dad grew up in the Syracuse area, and he has no recollection of the bakery at all.

Hey Bill,

I did a little looking, but found no good answers. My best guess would be Spring Water. There is a listing for:

"G. H. Cochrane, proprietor Syracuse Bakery; bakery, confectionery and ice cream; 23 Public Square." on page 262 of the 1895 Century of Progress of Jefferson County.

There's a swell ad for

"Tea Biscuit! Hot and Fresh every
afternoon at 3 p.m.. A Postal Card or
verbal order will get them delivered at
your reswidence. 10 cents per dozen.
SYRACUSE BAKERY, 23 Public Square" near the bottom of column 5 under "Miscellaneous" in this March 19, 1895 issue of the Watertown Daily Times.

Thanks for the info! That certainly helps. Maybe I was thinking of "bakery" in overly narrow terms. Sounds like the company sold a lot more than just bread, cakes and cookies.
