I found this in an old 1880s field painting box. The oil paint tubes and porcelain palette inside it also date from the mid to late 1800s.

The bottle has a seam that stops at the shoulder. The label says Closson's and Cincinnati. Closson's Gallerey was opened in 1866.

I would like to know when was the bottle made? Also, is it a sample bottle? It has what looks like India ink seeping out on the wax sealed cork closure.

Of course I cannot say for certain but I suspect your bottle dates from the 1880s to 1890s and is a full size bottle for the contents, probably artist's paint. All that is based more on what you wrote than the picture tells me.

I still think it's India ink. It looks like shellac based ink. I thought it might be a medium bottle for something like damar varnish. But it's pitch black and shiny. My guess is that it went in a small wooden sketch box with a well type pallet and brush for doing ink wash drawings. Paint was either sold in small metal tubes or cakes at the time.
