Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

Thanks for the info. Should I empty them & try to clean them a little? If so, how do I get the tops off without bending them & what would be the best way to clean them? I've done some research about the oxalic or citric acid cleaning methods, but would that be appropriate for these cans?

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

Here are some other shots of the Champagne Velvet. Can anyone suggest a good can collector site? This is opening up a whole new area for me. Like others, I have been tossing those old rusty cans & not even bothering to dig in those 1940's & 50's dumps.

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

Would be best to open them by the top by using a quarter on top of cap & opening slowly with bottle opener a little at a time around cap. Using the quarter will keep from bending cap. Then soak in oxalic acid. I would not use any other acid. Good luck. LEON.

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

I've dug the Champagne velvet cone a few times in Michigan & Alabama, ect. It's a common can. Cooks is common but a little tougher & more desirable. Seems I dig more flat tops then cone tops. LEON.

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

Clean them with warm soap and water that should be enough. You won't be able to return the humidity spotting to new, but your cans are pretty clean looking already and Oxalic will remove the patina. Be safe. I personally would probably go with a cleaning using MAGUIARS CLEANER WAX. There are cap lifters. I have one, but the quarter and patience is a good technique.

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

The Acid will do nothing to remove or improve humidity or moisture spots which is common on metallic cans such as yours. Bruce has a point, Your cans are not really rusty enough to require a acid bath. Soaking in acid does seem to lighten or dull colors & if you use hot water (which works faster) the hotter water will fade colors fast if left in to long & your reds will turn to pink, ect. LEON.

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

I like to keep them full myself but I'm about the only can collector that does. Most people will drain a old can. Leaving full you can run into lots of Problems, For example, that discoloration in the gold color at the bottom of your Champagne velvet most likely a result of it being full. Some times they will rust from the inside out & spring a hole or leak. Best to drain unless you like them full & want to risk it. LEON.

Re: RE: WANTED: BEER CANS

Drain them. With the contents they are heavy. If you would drop a full one instant damage results, but and empty dropped stands a chance of remaining unscathed. And they will leak; better for them to remain dry and not take the chance of a hole forming in the can. That is a bad thing.
