H.P & W C Taylor Perfumers Philadelphia.......just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of great pot lids (&bases) from the United States....I 've had these lids any number of years & thought I should present them on this forum....Any idea just how many of these big 5" lids are out there? One has just got to love this bold advertising....Oh and also I heard speculation one time that these two large lids were made for the 1876 Celebration of Indepence....any ideas?

I've dug very few pot lids....the Big Dig (1998) in San Francisco produced pot lids in number....but other then that they seem to be few and far between in the USA.

RE: The Buffalo Hunt

There only others I am aware of by Taylor in 5 inch multi colour are the variations. The Delaware comes in a blue boarder and the buffalo hunt a pink. Jules Hauel was the only other to do 5 inch multi coloured I believe which also are quite hard.

Both great lids with historic importance and would think both of these are from the early 1850,s rather than 1876 as H P & W C Taylor had an exhibit at the Worlds Fair of 1851 in London which Felix Pratt also had and these lids were made by Pratt at his pottery in England and would assume an order went in from Taylor to Pratt at that time or very soon after.According to Sony Jacksons American Pot Lid book the company changes its name in 1862 to H P &C R Taylor Company and again in 1873 to C R Taylor company until 1883 so would seem strange for a company to in 1876 put out a commerative that had not used that business name for approx 14years

Trog...........Good information....That's exactly why I posted here......any idea as to the number of these lids in collections? Jackson's estimates are "way off" number wise & comparitive rarity....but then it was written a long time ago.

Not sure on numbers but know of 2 basically mint Washingtons and 1 Buffalo Hunt here in Australia. I have heard of several of both designs in the U K but most have had repairs and therefore have some form of damage .Obviously there should be a number of mint items in the U S including yours and another member from San Francisco that I know of also had a pair the same as yours. Not much help really on numbers and because of there size a large percentage would be found with some damage and because of this any that are mint are certainly considered rare .
