I moved north from Florida about 4 years ago and never unpacked everything. I was looking for something in storage yesterday and found my box of bottles. I unpacked and found this one in there. Funny thing is I have absolutely no recollection of when and where I got it. I must have bought it right before I moved because I really don't remember it at all. I definitely picked it up in South Florida, possibly in the keys and I almost definitely got it a flea market. All that aside, I can't figure out what it was or when it would date to. The swirling in the patina makes me think that came out of the water. Judging by where I lived, probably the Atlantic Ocean but if I did get it when I was down in the keys it might have been the Gulf. It looks to be crudely made. I can't see any pontil mark but it's possible that if there was one, it was worn off by sand and time. The lip is a little odd as it appears to be rolled inward. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Also, I was considering throwing it in the tumbler. I do like the swirls but there is a lot of white mineral build up inside, so I may just tumble the inside and leave the outside alone. Any thoughts on that?

It looks like a Capers bottle. The style did not change for over a very long time so dating would be tough. It is an interesting piece and a good conversation starter. Not a lot of value because no maker or packer information.

Nice bottle! I agree on it being a capers bottle, likely European which makes dating it much harder since they didn't follow the same progression of glassmaking technology that happened in the US. Personally I wouldn't tumble it, since the staining on the outside makes it look more interesting to me. Is it possible to only tumble the inside and leave the outside the same? I didn't know that could be done, it would make sense in this and a lot of other cases to do that since no one wants staining on the inside of a bottle.

Thanks for the imput. I understand that and exact age isn't possible, but what would you say is the possible range on it? I think I might tumble the inside only. I think that would make the swirling on the outside stand out more. It's pretty easy to do. Just fill it with copper and cork it, then put it inside a piece of PVC pipe held in the center by come cut up strips of foam pool noodle.

I have seen a similar condiment bottle in a dump dating from 1910-1920. I would think it's older than 1920 simply because machining bottles was so much cheaper by that point - unless of course as CanadianBottles suggested earlier that it's a European export. There are some small buisnesses there that still make bottles the old fashioned way and sell their products as if the past 100 years never happened.
