What? Jug stopper?

I just found what looks to be a cap for a large jug. Never seen it before.
It's fired clay, coffee brown glaze, 4 lines incised on the top. Crude but effective.. 2 3/4 in across top, 2 1/2 in high. The inside stopper is 1 3/4 in.
What do you think ? ? ?

Demijohn stopper. I've dug a lot of them at bottling works and chemical plants where they handled a lot of those huge demijohn or carboys with chemicals.

Thanks for the info. I knew it had to be a stopper. It's good to have friends who know more than I do.
Not too hard, unfortunately.
