Wide 1qt. Jar with small neck - what is it?

Found this out back clearing a new to us property in southeastern CT.
It had a deep black tar like coating inside which cleaned up with mineral spirits.
Has a line all the way around with two lines of text “ sealed B-B-B One quart (liq) To line”
What the heck was in it?

Is the lip threaded or does it look like a top would have popped on? Hard to tell on my phone

There are no threads on the lip.
Probably cork or snap on.
