I have an American pot lid in my collection and would like anyone
to give me any information known about same. The lid is lozenge
shaped circa 93mm x 60mm – 'X BAZIN charcoal tooth paste'
this was dug some 30 years ago out of a farm rubbish pit in a field
in north Lincolnshire how it got there is a mystery. I see from reading your
posts that X BAZIN is one of the most common type of lid found
in the USA so I assume it is not a asset that will allow me to retire early.

Hi,
Sorry no early retirement here!
Although some of Bazin's lids would collect a pretty sum ..(bears grease etc) this is not one of them.. there were at least 4 variants of this kind of lid. It seems that the lid you have was still availiable in the late 1890's and is fairly common. Bazin was certainly the most prolific producer of lids alongside Jules Hauel in USA. Sadly, due to the lack of interest, Lids aren't as popular as in UK. too bad.

Thanks for that I'll keep the day job!

I'm pleased to see that bottle digging is still alive and well in the USA
It's more or less died out in the UK mainly due to the lack of suitable sites but
also the ones who used to dig here in the 70's (me included) are way too old now
and we all have bad backs to worry about.

Still it never leaves you, I still stop and look in antique shop windows if thay have old bottles on show, always looking for a local ginger beer you dont have in your cabinet.

Regards

Ebay , with its good points and bad points, has really given a boost to bottle collecting in the US. I think a lot more people have gotten into the hobby with easier access to buying bottles on the web.
