Valentine's Meat Juice was a patent medicine formulated by Virginia dry goods merchant Mann S. Valentine II in the fall of 1870 to cure his ailing wife Anne Maria.

Here is Mr. Valentine:

And here is Anne Marria:

Knowing that Anne Maria couldn’t stomach solid food, while also being in desperate need of nutrients, Valentine formulated a tonic from beef juice and egg whites. The tonic was more effective than beef broth, he reasoned, because boiling meat for broth leaves it “impaired in value". By gently cooking the beef at a low temperature and then pressure-cooking it, he extracted juice from the meat which he surmised would retain more of its nutritional value and would be “acceptable to the most irritable stomach,” he wrote.

Anne Marie soon was cured of her ailment which Mr. Valentine attributed to his preparation. He later devised a meathod of mass production and sold the product to doctors, hospitals, and even to laborers who needed a quick meal without having time to stop working (19th century's equivalent to a "5-Hour Energy" drink).

Valentine used this press to apply the corks to the bottles.

Dr. Bell's Pine-Tar-Honey for Coughs and Colds was another patent medicine. Founded in 1894 by E. E. Sutherland and Dr. Bell, the firm manufactured, patented, and sold medications worldwide from their headquarters in Paducah, Kentucky.

Ads boasted that it gave "quick relief and permanent relief in grippe as well as coughs and colds."

Plum Bros. Boardwalk Atlantic City.

This bottle was made by the Whitall Tatum Company of Millville, New Jersey some time between 1901-1924.

That is all for now.

Nice finds. Congrats Underminer. :) ..Love that little meat juice bottle, Dr. V. and sweet Anne Maria's story complete with invention and pics of all. Somewhere I have a British version's little amber bottle packed away. Similar story. Sorry, can't recall the name at the moment but wonder if anyone knows whose came out first? ..Digging in this heat is challenging. Be prepared--even more so. Make smart choices and taking one's time will ensure a safe dig and a return engagement at the bottle pit bijou.

Those 1880s 'staches, sideburns, and haircuts were certainly an era of masculine self expression.
