not sure what it is with Friday nights here but every now and then I make odd finds during them . yesterday being a good example , was in town and bored as there's nothing to do here cause of covid restrictions . so I decided to poke around a wooded area near a major road and look for cans and bottles .

at some point I found what looked like a flat metal object under some leaves/dirt so I pulled it out and to my surprise it was a metal sign . since there is a gas station nearby I assumed it was one of there old signs . but not sure as I've never heard of a company called " Pyrofax " operating in Canada but it appears they did and sold " bottled gas " now called propane for use in homes/cooking stoves . not sure of exact year this sign is from but not recent maybe 50's or 60's era ?

this sign as has a local connection as its for a local business called " Parrott's Limited " Huntsville Ont . I've never heard of them before and asked parents and they don't remember this business either but do remember there being people around here named Parrott and being involved in a few other things .

I haven't cleaned it yet or even rinsed off the dirt , its currently sitting outside , its fairly big but did manage to fit into the trunk of car last night and I got it home with no trouble .

exact wording on signs reads " PYROFAX trademark BOTTLED GAS , dependable service , Parrott's Limited - Huntsville Ont 789-2318

Very cool. How many signs have you found total? I’ve only found one rusty crusty tire sign

this is what it looks like after a light cleaning , basically hosed off all the dirt/sand and lightly started to clean the white pyrofax letters a bit

it has a bend to it , not sure how to flatten it out again but suspect its doable somehow

That's a really nice find, 2021 is turning into a great sign year for you! And it's an added bonus that it has a local business's name on it. Not sure on age, the 7-digit phone number suggests it's not that old, maybe 60s or 70s?

the 7 digit phone number is still early , for Huntsville " 789" is the original number as it grew they added 788 , 787 , 783 etc . so for it to use 789 is still a sign its still has some age

not at all familiar with signs or this company to be able to date it to a specific year , its not a really early pyrofax sign as I saw some of them online and look much different

In my area 7 digit phone numbers were used in the late 40s and 1950s too

I know " 789 " is the original number for Huntsville but not sure what year it came into use , so tough to date based on the phone number

there may be some people around here who know more about this sign but haven't been able to ask anyone yet

was looking thru some sold listings on ebay from Huntsville Ontario and came across an old printed map which featured a list of local businesses , the seller said its from the 1960's although unable to date it to an exact year so not sure when it was printed

but it features an add from Parrott's ltd but not for pyrofax

says

" Plumbing is our specialty , complete home and cottage service "

Parrott's Ltd , box 700 , phone 789-2316 , Huntsville Ontario

it has the same business name and phone # , still trying to determine the connection between pyrofax gas ( propane ) and plumbing although it seems they were involved in the local business scene back then so maybe sold / did multiple things
