Hi Stu.....sounds like you have a great early potential dump site or home site washing into that creek? There are several other diggers on here with more expertise on finding dumps than I have, but I usually follow the creek upstream to where the glass is washing out of the bank somewhere. Every...
Nice pics and story Joe. Now you guys have got me all crazy and in dire need of a digging fix! That early look rock wall you found certainly gives me good vibes of something old buried nearby.....I'd probe every inch of that area behind the wall, no matter what it was. That safe you found must...
Hey Rhona...thanks for the nice pics of your finds. I sure envy you in having such a great dump to dig. That green whiskey would have been a screamer! We all know how it goes though, as the good ones usually are broken arent they? I suppose it's an aspect of Murphy's Law...haha. I havent posted...
Your story of taking your 6 yr old son out bottle hunting brings back fond memories for me. My son was about 5 yrs old when he began really wanting to go bottle digging....so I took him with me...and he's been digging with me ever since. It sounds like your boy might have a growing interest? You...
Welcome George....I also began digging dumps back around 1970 when I was a kid. It has been a lifelong adventure for me that has never lost it's thrill. It sounds like you have caught the bug again my friend! We'll look forward to hearing of your finds and seeing some pics. wow, that bronze...
Nice finds Paul. That looks like a fun dig! Any time pontils pop out of the ground it's exciting for sure. I know what you mean about the tear jerkers....man, that's a shame. That is a great story how you got the permission. Now you'll have us all anxious to hear how you do in the other...
Hey Marc & Wayne...I loved your pics of those side by side barrels! I'm surprised they werent older? Most of our barrel pits here in the Midwest are pontil era or close to it. I'll bet there are older pits on the lot perhaps? Good luck and keep us posted. You guys are so lucky to have good dumps...
Nice dig Mike! I love that amber 7-UP...and we just hardly ever find those WHITE HOUSE VINEGARS in my area for some reason. I sure wish I had a dump like you're digging in. Thanks for sharing man.....and say HI to Lee also. Good luck! (DiggerDave)
Thanks for sharing your finds Rhona. I've had days that I didnt get as much as what you just dug....so keep on digging girl! Isnt it great that the spring thaw has come a little early? YEAH!!
We also dug a later privy from the 1885-1890's era, which we got about 75 bottles from, including a cool milkglass lamp, some hutchs, medicines, foods and normal fare. It was a fun dig, so we cant wait to get back to dig a couple more pits we have probed out. We hope to merely to encourage other...
Paul's pit was also mixed pontils from the early 1860's. He pulled out some broken criers, including a yellow olive, iron pontil CHAPMAN BALTIMORE soldier flask, amber pontiled umbrella ink, mochaware pitchers, several Pikes Peak, Eagle & Union flasks, etc. He finally got a nice Double Eagle...
My son Paul and I dug a couple privy pits saturday. It was a nice day in Illinois, so we are glad the ground is finally thawed out enough that we dont have to chop frozen soil. My pit had a lot of bottles, but nothing exciting, except a nice UNION F.A&CO CANNON flask. Here's a picture of the...
Hi Bob....thanks for your note. Here's a pic of 4 of the squares that come out of one of the trash pits I dug last week. I am really thankful to the Lord for a great hot streak of digging this winter! There was a nice variety of square bitters type bottles, including several nice puce and...
Well said Doug....I agree totally with you my friend. I am not nearly so articulate as others, but in my 35 yrs of digging experience, I have seen a lot of good and bad things happen to our wonderful hobby. It is encouraging to see young collectors getting into bottle collecting and digging, so...
