I have dug several here in Virginia; some only have rocks and dirt and tractor parts, others are clean, and a few have the goodies. I would do like lex says and do a test hole, just make sure you have a partner if you are digging deep. The rocks will make it quite difficult and slow to dig; also...
Ok, I have a technical ballpark question on pontiled bottles under $50 that are embossed; How many different ones exist in the US? It could be a fun collection to have. I am guessing around 350 or more. Any ideas?

Sometimes there are no bottles! I live in VA and most privies outside towns will be less than 4' with just a few bottles inside (5 bottles). Towns had a few that are deeper, but looking at your pic, these are not rowhouses or 1/4 acre sites. Probably there are some privies, but they will be hard...

After many years of broken ones, I finally dug my first 8 sided Pepsi Cola from Richmond, Va. I thought it was another Taka Cola, because of its light aqua color. Shown on the pic is also a Charlottesville, Va. Taka Cola I dug last year. Now we can see why there was a copyright infringement case...
