W. T. CO. Vial with the original cotton inside

I dug this cool jar marked W. T. Co (Whitall Tatum Co) on the base. It was found with the original cotton inside! Was the contents ONLY cotton or something else? Has this happened to anyone before?

I wouldn't mess with it, the contents might be something VERY nasty. The bottle is not worth much so, in my opinion, no loss if you dispose of the entire thing.

Are we sure it's cotton....? If it is, it might have been just to absorb moisture. All my vitamin bottles have a big ball of fluff in them, too.

It looks threadlike and has a stringy look. I am pretty sure it's cotton but you could be right Spirit Bear.

For what its worth, I say it's hand blown with a ground top.
