I dug a Fletcher's Bottling Works soda bottle and noticed that instead of one seam dividing the bottle in half, there are two seams dividing the bottle into quarters. I've never seen that type of mold used so I was wondering if any of you soda bottle experts would know. The bottle is crown top...around 1910s. The bottle isn't cleaned yet (darn VA clay []) and these aren't the best pictures, so I hope you can make out the seams. This first one is a seam running through the middle of the embossing.

This one is a quarter turn...you can still see the embossing on the front. Hopefully you can still see the mold seam, as said before, these aren't HQ pics. Thanks for any input, cause I'm puzzled [8|].

Must have been a mold that was open for some reason after the initial blow and then the bottle was spun 90 degrees and the mold closed again...

It is pretty hard to tell. Do two seams go all the way up on the Crown finish?

It would be almost impossible on an ABM product. It would take some hands on for me to tell. But it makes a good bottle mystery. RED Matthews

Thanks epack and RED for your replies. Only one of the seams on the bottle goes through the crown top, and that one runs through the embossed side. My guess is that Fletcher Bottling Works bought pre-made bottles and just used their own embossing device to emboss the bottles with the company name. I guess they embossed on the seam by mistake...that's why there is another seam on the bottle. Just a theory. I don't know. But I would find it hard to believe that the embossing would be split on two sides of the bottle machine. It would be easier to have it on one side.

None of that is possible...

Well Jim is right - it couldn't happen like you are thinking.
First of all you said there was only one seam on the finish, There has to be two if the finish was created in the neckring.
Next point - the embossing is normally raised glass and is caused by the hot glass being blown into the letters that were cut in the mold cavity wall.

Embossing is normally created in the mold half cavities and does not get broken up across a mold seam. In fact if they tried to do that opening the mold halves to get the bottle out would tear up the lettering that was created in the hot glass formed detail.

This seam going up over hardened embossed lettering, makes it even more important to send it to me. I will return it to you. RED Matthews

I should have worded that better...I was referring to one seam pair, not just one seam. Sorry about that. But the mold seam does run through the embossed side, and doesn't appear to affect the lettering. I'd be happy to send it to you. I'll soak it and get it cleaned for you and I'll let you know when it's ready.

Thanks again guys!

DUB ~

Does the seam/line go all the way to the base or stop where I placed the arrow?

Thanks.

Bob

That line continues down to the base. It's hard to see, but you can see where the seam is near the base.
