Hi, I just picked up a couple neat bottles. This is a codd bottle that reads D. H. Smith Yonkers New York. I could only find one piece of info that says its rare but thats it. Does anyone know the maker and date of this bottle and maybe a value? Thanks for any help. Kevin

Most American companies used Codds around 1890. Some may have used them longer. They were made in england and orders were shipped over. This and the fact that most were broken for the marble made them expensive and rare. In England and Austrailia used them longer and in India they were brought back into use in the 1960s and 70s.

In Pensacola the WM Hudson Bottling Works used them and they are a prised find. The most common one had a star, sometimes with the number one in the star. The least common had full company embossing with city, state and Codd on the bottom. Hudson used them in the late 1880s for less than 3 years.

I don't feel comfortable rattling off values, and there's a good reason for that! However, being a beer and soda bottle enthusiast, I'd say a NY Codd must be rather sought after.. they just don't show up every day.. very nice!!

If yours is lacking the Codd & Co. marking on the reverse, it is the most common of the three Smith Codd bottles. Click on the link to see Smith's other bottles:

I see these with some regularity at East Coast Shows usually priced between $50 and $100.

There are about 100 true Cood shaped bottles from the United States. Looks like a good start on a collection!
