My brother loves 50's "kitsch"....
Amongst other things, he & his wife collect tiki mugs. About 3 years ago, Traci was diagnosed with MS. He has worked with the MS Society to design and sell a tiki mug to raise money for the MS Society.
The full story can be found here: http://www.northeasttikitour.com/msmug/
He told me there are still about 40 mugs still available if anyone is interested. To me, tiki mugs are like Hummels. One is nice - 50? About 45-49 too many!
If anyone digs a tiki mug, let me know... I'm sure my brother will be interested in it.
Another note - tiki mug collectors have their own website... www.ooga-mooga.com
You may want to check this out, as it's a pretty neat site - you will all be wishing there were a bottle site like this.[] You can post your collection on-line, list all sorts of information about it, including how much you paid. If you see one for sale, you can note the price it was sold for and kind of keep track of the value of your collection.
My brother's collection can be found under Suffering Bastard in Maine (not going to try to explain[8|])... click on one of the mugs and see the information that comes up.
The mug itself has a few interesting features you might not realize right off the bat. The basic design is that of a Moai, because, well, we are the Fraternal Order of MOAI! And our Queequeg Chapter was named after the character in Moby Dick who had Maori-style tattoos all over him. Therefore, we included tattoos that symbolize health and life (the sun) and rebirth/renewal (the "koru" swirls). Since this is to benefit the MS Society, we figured that symbolism was appropriate. Another little bit is that the mug has feet. We know Moai don't have feet, but these Moai in New England have walked together in the MS Walk, so we figured, hey! We're the walking Moai! Give the mug some feet!
Yeah, glassman.. I kind of like it, but can't possibly imagine having a whole collection of them. One is enough. To each his own, though. My brother has his own opinions of me, too![]
Know what you mean! I have so many posters of the BEATLES in our "MUSIC ROOM" I am sure someone seeing them would swear they was some sort of shrine to the BEATLES.Maybe a weird BEATLE CULT! NAW ,ain't that, just bought a lot of posters at flea markets over the years. COURSE I DO LOVE THEM FAB FOUR.Right you are to each their own!
Check out www.ooga-mooga.com, though - if you click on one of the mugs in the collection, you can list information about it and the tiki-wackers can post sell-for prices. It's pretty neat!
