Once again, as with most of the bottles in my collection, this piece was picked up by my father, while skin diving in Cuba. Has "ERVEN LUCAS BOES HET LOOTSJE AMSTERDAM." on the side. Is 12" high by 3 1/2"diameter. Obviously a stoneware jug from Amsterdam, but how old is it and what was it used for ? Wine? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Gigster

Your bottle is a Dutch gin bottle - Ervan Lucas BOLS produced a range of gin/schnapps in glass and stoneware containers. BOLS were quite prolific gin distillers and distributors from 1850's and still produce gin and liquers today.

This weblink provides some additional information about stoneware gins http://www.antiquebottles.co.za/Pages/Categories/StoneGins.htm
