I was at a shop today and saw a freeblown black glass bottle. About 9" tall, 4" wide. It was dark olive green, very old for sure. The top was really crude laid on type with a small chip in it and some lip roughness. I would say it was 1820's at the latest. The problem I didn't like was someone had started to drill a hole in the heel to make a lamp, I presume. They drilled part of the glass and spun the bit onto the surface otf the glass a couple of times, making some squiggley scratches around the 1/4" hole. No seals, no embossing. Glass was clean.

My question: how much value does this take from the bottle? I passed on it for now, because I don't usually like to buy damaged glasss. What is the before damage/ after damage guide for an early bottle like this? Any opinion is appreciated.

This is a picture of a bottle that it looks a lot like. I didn't have my camera at the shop, so I found this pic online.

I wouldn't pay much for it. I have found with past experience that holes, cracks and large chips really hurt resale value unless the bottle is rare or unique. If you can get it cheap you could always make a lamp out of it....Just Kidding.
