I got this at an antique shop in Cedar Point,NC. consignment for a lady who found it in her back yard in the ground (Swansboro, NC). On the bottle it says Webb's Double Soda & other WATERS To her majesty Islington London. No cracks or chips. I have bottle books but not to much info on these. Can I have some help? I am a beginner bottle collector. Thank you!!!

Hi,

The bottle you have is known as a Torpedo or Hamilton bottle and are a common style of bottle and were in use from around 1810 -1910. Your bottle is quite a common brand and found in several countries and would date from around 1860.

the credit for there invention of them goes to a thomas hamilton dublin ireland ,also know as hamies or hamiltons or torpedos, or egg shape, the reason they had round end so the liquid in side would always be touch with the cork ,hence stopping the cork from drying out and keeping liquid in the bottle. and thats how i started collecting just one thats all it takes
good luck.

The lady at the antique shop told me that on ships coming across the sailors would tie a line around the top and have them in the water to stay cold is that true?

That could be true with basically any style bottle. Torpedos were oval shaped so the corks stayed wet.
